Darling in the Franxx Hiro Funny
Whether it's Zero Twosday or just another day in 2020, there's going to be plenty of demand for some laughs within the anime community. For all of its attempts at seriousness and the darkness of its entire world, Darling in the Franxx was just too surreal of a series to keep away from memes.
When teenage angst meets giant robots that are literally powered by sexual energy, the series is just bound to meet some cringeworthy if not outright hilarious material along the way. The series does have plenty of glistening parts to keep the experience mostly smooth along the way, but the anime community has made sure to immortalize every bump on that road with some top tier meme material.
10 Happy Zero Twosday!
For people new to Zero Twosday or just Zero Two in general, it is possibly Darling in the Franxx's most lasting legacy within the anime world. No matter how many DVDs or statues this series may sell, what's really keeping its legacy alive is a weekly holiday dedicated to Zero Two memes.
Whether someone's roasting the series or a loyal fan just wants to simp for Zero Two's iconic smile, Zero Twosday has become a unifying force for the anime community and an oddly decent way of advertising the series well past its season. If cult success hasn't gotten the series fans, then maybe Zero Two's spammed smile will.
9 Ichigo Knows How Malty Feels
When Ichigo first debuted, no one suspected that she'd be one of the series'— and possibly one of modern anime's— most hated characters. At worst, she was the best friend; and at best, she was the childhood friend that was competing with Zero Two. It would've been a classic love triangle that would have fans debating the same way they debate over Asuka and Rei from Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Unfortunately, stupid teenage mistakes just have a tendency to ruin anyone and everyone, and the once-childhood friend now sets the example for all anime villainess' to come. There's character progression, and there's throwing a character bio down a cliff.
While Ichigo's main character trait during the early series was being "the childhood friend," even that would be taken away. With the power of sad backstories within a sci-fi anime, Zero Two would beat Ichigo by leagues in that department.
In one of the most memorable backstories of recent memory, Zero Two pulled off a childhood romance that was at parts surprising, tragic, and adorable. Ichigo just got named by Hiro. It's almost as if Ichigo was never in contention to be the love interest.
7 Rem Felt That One
Ichigo, at the very least, has several layers as to why people don't like her. ON one level, she pushed herself onto Hiro within the midst of every fan riding the Zero Two train. On another, she left Goro, her long-time partner and someone who genuinely likes her, out in the cold.
The likes of such harsh rejection hasn't been felt since Re:Zero's first season. Goro and Rem get to stand on the same pedestal of sweet cinnamon buns who deserved better. Ichigo has to go to the gallows a second time.
6 He's Crying, She's Crying, Everyone Keeps Crying
As mentioned earlier, Zero Two has a pretty sad backstory. Much like how Hiro and the other kids were being bred and raised as future soldiers, Zero Two faced a similar yet arguably more desensitizing experience as a government experiment.
When the two somehow found each other when they were kids, they shared a heartfelt yet inevitably tragic experience that makes watching the early episodes even harder. This isn't as much a meme as it is an excuse to wallow with a tub of ice cream.
5 No Better Universe Out There
Few anime girls have had such sustainable runs as "Best Girl" as Zero Two. The only reason that there's even a weekly holiday dedicated to her is because the internet was just bound to implode if there wasn't a consistent outlet for everyone's Zero Two JPEGs.
She has personality. She has a sad backstory. She has an iconic smile on top of some iconic, alien horns. While some people are not fans of Darling in the Franxx, most are definitely still following Zero Two to this day.
4 Kokoro Ain't Loyal
There's plenty of romance, action, and teenage angst going on outside of the Hiro romantic circle, and each is almost as charged and tense as his story. Second only to Hiro's romantic entanglements, the other major character story going on was between Kokoro, Mitsuru, and Futoshi.
The series' doesn't even hide the fact that the mech partners in this world are based on romantic/biological compatibility— that is to say, government science dudes were shipping teenagers. That's what made Kokoro's promise to Futoshi to stay as partners all the more special and even more tragic when she'd inevitably leave him for Mitsuru. Love has always been hard, and adding giant robots hasn't made it easier.
3 Pick A Lane, Ichigo
For those who haven't even seen Darling in the Franxx, the greater tragedy that is Ichigo's love life is no longer a mystery at this point. With awkward kisses, rejections, and mixed messages, the girl has practically made awkward teenage drama an artform.
In grand, self-sabotaging fashion, Ichigo keeps taking away points for that ever crucial Ichigo x Hiro case, yet has the audacity to act surprised and petty when another girl comes in, spends time with him, and shows explicit interest. Love is hard, and Ichigo is only making it harder.
2 Did You Say Zero Two Or Unit Two?
Darling in the Franxx looks a lot like Neon Genesis Evangelion. Depending on whether or not a Darling in the Franxx fan is aware of the internet or not, they may come across one or two or three-thousand comparisons between Studio Trigger's project and Gainax's seminal work.
Both series feature mechs that can only be piloted by teenagers, going up against strange alien forces. Both have cruel father figures forcing children to their deaths. Both focus on intimate, character-driven plots that expand into very surreal and arguably long-winded metaphors about life but mostly about how hard it is to be a teenager in Japan. Things like the main female characters of either show being associated with the number 2 just don't help.
1 We've Gone Too Far
To go even further with the Evangelion comparisons, the ending of either series just went completely bonkers. And while Evangelion's two endings were made in clear response to external cultural forces, Darling in the Franxx's final message was much harder to read.
Things just get really weird, and it doesn't become easier to make sense of when it's found out that Trigger handed the final episodes to a different studio. If nothing else, going from alien clone to godlike mech to plant is unique character development to say the least.
